The chemical piperine, present in black pepper, causes the spiciness. When dried, this plant-derived spice is referred to as a peppercorn. Because of its antibacterial properties, pepper is used to preserve food. Black pepper is also a very good anti-inflammatory agent.

Cinnamon is made by cutting the stems of cinnamon trees. The inner bark is then extracted, and the woody parts removed. When it dries, it forms strips that curl into rolls, called cinnamon sticks.

Chili powder is sometimes known by the chili pepper used (such as cayenne pepper) and is incorporated in many different cuisines, including Tex-Mex, Indian, Chinese, Korean and Thai. This spice is used to add pungency and flavour to dishes.
